I have a 2000 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with steering wheel controls. I'm wanting to upgrade my CD player to something fancier, but I still want to be able to use the same steering wheel controls, rather than a new clip-on remote. Is this possible and what are my options/or what to look for when buying one

Peripheral Electronics makes steering wheel control interfaces that will work with your vehicle for most major brands of stereos. Go to their website and enter in your vehicle information then scroll down and click where it says steering wheel control interfaces. I will have a list of compatible radios towards the bottom of the page.

Besides that, most likely you can still control it from your steering wheel controls. You just have to reconnect it to your new cd player and their corresponding wiring.
