i have recently purchased a 1999 vw jetta and the turn signals are dead. as well as the flashers. someone told me about a flasher box that may have gone bad but i have no idea. when you use the turn signals there is no action. no lights blink on dash or car and there is no clicking sound that you would normally hear. the bulbs are fine cause they work whenever i set the car alarm and lock the vehicle.

can anyoine help me diagnose this problem. i have checked all the fuses in the fuse box and cant seem to find anything. i also was told that there is a flasher box at the steering column. is this true?

thank you for your much needed help

If it the the newer body style(1999.5) the flasher is built in to the emergency flasher switch(Hazard switch). Replace that and it is fixed.

If it is the A3 body style it will be a relay in the relay box relay number 21, third one in top row left to right

If those are a no go, try spraying some contact cleaner in around your switch could be dirty or possibly gone all together
