I want to use my iPod in the car without the crappy FM transmitter. My first thought was to buy an aftermarket head unit, so I hit up Crutchfield and picked out a receiver with front auxiliary input and built-in iPod controls.
After chatting with the rep for a bit about what is included in their free installation kit, I mentioned that I had the Business CD
(no cd changer) rather then the HK system. He told me that they don't have a Mastersheet (car specific instructions) for replacing the Business CD, but that it was probably pretty similar to replacing the HK system and that their product support team would be able to walk me through any differences. I haven't done any installation before and am a little concerned.
While browsing here for more information, I saw that some people are using DICE or the BSW aux input. These seem to be as (more?) popular then aftermarket head units.
Ultimately, I just want to be able to listen to some form of digital music in the car- right now I only have a 2GB nano, so I was also looking at units where you could use thumbdrives. I don't want to deal with a painful installation process and I have around $150.
1) Has anybody had any experience installing aftermarket head units into a 2002 325ci that had a Business CD? Is it different then what is described in Crutchfield's Mastersheet for the HK system? Would the HK Mastersheet be enough to do it? Or is car stereo install into BMWs extra painful or something?
2) Why are so many people using the DICE instead of just installing an aftermarket head unit? It seems like a new head unit is a better option when these are the same price as the head units I am looking at. Should I look at these instead?
This is the head unit I was looking at for $145 shipped: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_020CZ20...9.html?tp=5684
