Somtimes its cheaper, sometimes not. Installs cost anywhere from Free to 70 bucks.. The biggest problem is install kits and wiring harnesses are worth maybe 50 cents a piece, but they will want to charge 20 bucks a piece for them. also make sure you go to a place that will ahve lifetime warrenties on installs and keep the recipt. Mom and pop shops dont usually do this. Added benefit is if something goes wrong with the HU then they will troubleshoot it for you, and most times fix the problem. Depending on the unit it could be cheaper could not, i would need to know what unit your looking at. Somtimes its cheaper to buy it somwhere else and drop it off somewhere you trust..

You'll need a CDRB10 (or CDRB20 if your also running a cd changer, but those are rarely used anymore) and a 1/8" to RCA connection cable. The CDRB10 plugs into the P-Bus input of the radio, and then you will need to go into the radio's menu and turn the aux on.

You will likely pay more for the 9886+imprint than for the CDA9887. Also, the CDA9886 only has just one color for the buttons (which is blue and might look out of place). Whereas the CDA9887 has like 5 different color combinations you can use. But the greatest difference of all is that the CDA9887 uses 24bit Burr Brown D/A converter...cd's sound much better on the 9887 than they do on the 9886. I've used both and have not found a head unit I like better than the CDA9887 (within similar price range anyway). I had the imprint for the CDA9887 as well...it did make a huge difference, but the only thing I didn't like about it is when it's activated...you cannot control the 7 band eq anymore. So I opted for the PXAH701.

There is a wire on the back of the radio harness that is grounding out. I don't remember which color it is as I've not dealt with eclipse in a while. But when that wire recieves a ground...it mutes the radio. That wire is supposed to be energized by a hands free cell phone kit.

Need some help in choosing a new head unit for my 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser. Stock system in the truck now. Speakers have been replaced/upgraded a few years ago with some alpines no idea what model. The options I think I need are, cd. mp3, IPod w/usb, radio station push button, the ability to change the head unit color to green to match the rest of the dash. I'll also need a dash kit and wiring harness they tell me. I have not idea where to start. I would like to find all the parts and pieces and then have them all installed, is this realistic? If so who would I look for to do the install. Would a Audio store do something like this or do I have to buy everthing from them. I have called around town to check prices, basic unit installed with everything I outlined, in the ball park of $250.00-300.00 give or take a few bucks. Could I save any $$$'s getting the equipment on my own? Thank you all for the help and feedback, great site I will be asking a lot of question down the road on this project.

Okay, so I've this specific head unit in my car since I had bought it and am assuming it's been in there quite awhile. The other day I was playing some music relatively loud (Little more than half the total volume limit 36/62). I had turned off the music for a short while and came back to turn it back on only to find out neither my main system, nor my subs were working. I figured, "Ok, it must be a fuse," so I went ahead and turned it off and then check the fuses. They were all fine, so then I turned it back on again and my subs were still working, then I figured it was a loose wire. After popping it out the wires were fine, but the back of the unit was scorching hot. I took apart the whole unit itself before I could find the actual problem. I had fried something, not sure what it is though, of if it's at all, replaceable:
(Here's the 'piece' and where it resided behind the metal incasement)

(Here's a close up of the fried part)
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
If anyone has any insight as to what this is, how this could of happened, and whether or not I can replace it, or have to buy an entirely new head unit. Please let me know.
Thanks

I recently purchased the Pioneer DEH-P4001HD head unit for my car, and had it professionally installed. After the installation, I tried to make sure everything was working. The radio and hd radio worked - all 4 speakers had sound. When I tried to play a cd or play my iPod - only the right front/back speakers worked.
Would there be a setting I accidently set where sound only comes out of the right speakers when playing anything but the radio?
I don't know much about car audio systems...I appologize in advance. I'm not very familiar with car audio systems.

What type of music do you listen to?
Different woofers are better at playing different frequencies better than others. I can recommend certain models for different types of music.

You want a 2ch amp for the 2 woofers.
A 4ch amp for the 4 speakers (get it?).

Yes, you will need to buy two amp wiring kits and give it to the installer.

Rockford is good stuff, you can just stick to Rockford subs and amps if you'd like. There are tons of good companies out there though, I especially like Kicker woofers/amps!

Just be sure, that the constant/rms power ratings of the amp to each channel is at or under what the woofers constant/rms power ratings are.

Hi all,

Is there someone who knows everything regarding the MP3 support of Kenwood multimedia receivers - in particular the KVT-729DVD?
I have lots of MP3 files on a SD card (via a card reader in the USB port), and most of them play well on the Kenwood.

However, there are quite a bunch of tracks that either:

- Won't play at all. When you choose that track, it gets skipped completely en the system moves on to the next track that CAN be played back.

- Plays scrambled. With noise and delayed by then times (sounding like a slow giant).

Other car audio's do play these MP3's without any problems, and ofcourse the PC too.

I was thinking about bitrate incompatibility , but when I look at the file details of the MP3's, there's no difference with the tracks that the Kenwood does play.
For example, one music album containing 40 MP3 files, all at 320 kbps. And yet some of them will get skipped/distorted.
So I guess it's not the files ... ?

I first had firmware 1.0.4 on the 729DVD and have updated this to the latest 1.0.9, but that didn't resolve this problem.

I really hope there's someone who knows what's the case here.

Thanks.

Hey guys,
I have problems with the Sony CDX R3300 radio head unit (or at least I think i do). what is happening is that every time i shut it down or disconnect the head unit from the car, I loose all the settings stored in memory. So radio stations are gone, volume settings are gone, you get the point.

I am thinking its something to do with the battery that keeps this stuff stored. Am I on the money or is it something else? and if its the battery, can i replace it my self?

I have a VW Beetle that can only take a single din head unit. I am torn between the Alpine CDA-9887 vs. the 9886/9884 with the Imprint processor. This is what I know:

CDA-9887 seems to have the built in features of the 9886+Imprint but is the IPOD functionality just as good/easy? Are the built in features as good?

CDA-9884 seems like the best financial choice but it is only 2 volt vs. 4 and doesn't have the biolite display. Does that make a huge difference if I am getting the Imprint processor anyway which is 4 volts?

What would you guys suggest?

Hello all. I am trying to decide which Alpine headunit to buy and would appreciate and input/help I can get. 90% of my music listening is thru my Ipod. I am running a Precision power Equalizer PAR-650 that boosts the preamp output to 6 volts RMS and 10 volts RMS for subwoofer.

I am looking at the ida-x100 because it has 24 bitt Bur Brown DAC but only has 2 volt outputs.

The other headunit I am looking at is the discontinued DVA-9861 because I have a friend that is selling it brand new. Im not sure about the conversion of this headunit? Maybe 16 bit? It does have 4 volt outputs so I thought that was a good thing.

Not sure how much output voltage will really be needed considering that I am running the PPI equalizer.

Thanks for any input/help!

You need to get an install kit for your car. Many of them are designed to set the radio out up to an inch (it will still be a tight fit)

For speakers, you need a pair of 3.5" and a pair of 6x9's. If you are going to push them with your deck, you can go with Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, etc. It all really depends on your budget.

with Pioneer units you can use upto a 250 gig usb powered hdd or any flash media and it is very fast, all the controls are done on the head unit. but the more you have the longer it takes to navigate it all. 4 gig flash sticks are ideal to keep navigating simpler.

You can probably get a set of keys off ebay or from Alpine if there are no shops in the area. I would pull it and wire another deck in to check the rest of the connections. Then you can bench test the Alpine. It sounds like there is definetly an iss with it though.
