Nav-TV Tooki Porsche Bluetooth Interface Review

NAV-TV recently released their Tooki bluetooth phone interface for Porsche PCM2, phone ready radios. I was very excited when I heard about this interface because until now there was no way of interfacing your bluetooth cellphone directly to your Porsche radio (its not even offered by Porsche).

So, I started researching the product. I discovered that it is completely “Plug and Play” and interfaces to the stock Porsche radio using the fiber optic MOST bus. I found this to be impressive because very few companies have interface products for vehicles with the MOST bus. After more research I discovered the retail price is $750, which I think is a little expensive, but it is your only option. From another perspective, a Porsche equipped with this radio cost upwards of $75,000. If you just spent that much on a car, $750 more to have your cellphone work, is not so bad.

Not long after the release of the product, a Porsche owner comes to my shop asking how to interface bluetooth with is factory radio. I told him that he was in luck, NAV-TV just released an interface for his vehicle. He was extremely happy, I sold it to him for $1000 installed. To my surprise, he didn’t even flinch at the price. I ordered the product and scheduled the install.

The next week, the product arrives and its time for the install. The install manual is very clear and easy to follow. I completed the install in about an hour, it really was a simple “Plug and Play” installation. The radio quickly recognized the new device and all the menus worked correctly. I was amazed at how smooth the install went.

Now its time for me to test the interface. I took out my bluetooth phone began the pairing process. The phone failed to pair. I then tried my co-workers phone, no luck with his phone either. At my shop we do many bluetooth installs with various different products, these two phones always pair properly. I find a third phone. To my surprise, this phone actually paired correctly. With the third phone paired, the interface worked perfectly.

I decided to call NAV-TV’s tech support to find out why only one of three phones would pair the interface. There response was, the first two phones were Verizon Wireless phones and most Verizon Wireless phones will not pair correctly to the Tooki. I found this to be absurd. Two phones that i have successfully connected to over 100 bluetooth phone kits will not pair with the Tooki. What really pissed me off was that on NAV-TV’s website there is a screen shot of the Tooki paired to a Verizon Wireless phone. The worst part about it, the customer had a Verizon Wireless phone.

So, now I am in a bad spot. The interface that I just charged $1000 for works, but it probably will not work with the customers phone. So, I completely put the car together and hope for the best. Surprisingly, the customer had one of the few cellphones from Verizon Wireless that actually works with the Tooki. Lucky me.

The Tooki interfaces perfectly with the stock Porsche PCM2 radio. The problem with the product is that it has phone compatibility issues. NAV-TV has a list of compatible phones. The two Verizon Wireless phones that failed to pair are listed as compatible. Which means the list is worthless.

I don’t know how to rate this product. On one hand, if you have a compatible phone, this product is great. On the other hand, if you have an incompatible phone, this product is worthless. At $750, it is a rather expensive interface to buy, especially if you are unsure of the results.

I am intending to sue Pacific Porsche as they represented to me that the Tooki system works perfectly It doesn’t. I have had nothing but problems. In fact, it is my understanding that at a service conference Porsche told its installers that the Tooki system doesn’t work and don’t install it.

Hmmm, point one… its not because you drive a porsche that 1000$ is peanuts thats crap! Rich people dont work this way 90% of them will say its a bloody expensive piece of kit just for bleutooth.
On the other hand when daddy is paying for everything … what the hell…

About the tooki , i was thinking of buying it for my cayenne to use with my HTC HD2 but first i would need to know for 100% if it works.
honestly i think its way to expensive and they would sell lots more if it would only be 3 to 400 $ … aaah well.
